Two matches for Windyedge this weekend – two century partnerships and the first league win!
Following Whitmore and Revell’s heroics on Saturday against Alps, ultimately in a losing cause, Memorial Field were on the receiving end of another 100 stand, this time unbroken, the free-scoring Whitmore on this occasion receiving support from his tenacious skipper.
Electing to chase on the newly laid carpet (for which Ardrossan must be commended – good even bounce, plenty of carry & affording the spinners a sniff), the Windeys must have wondered if it was the correct call as the opposition raced away at more than 5 an over. Cochrane then struck twice, having C Marshman caught superbly by Ganapathi at square leg and danger man I McLaggan nibbling at one – well held by Revie behind the stumps.
Cochrane & Dick then combined to slow the runs to a trickle, ably abetted by the improving Callaghan and the rapid Ganapathi. The eventual target - 168 - certainly attainable on a small quick outfield, but no foregone conclusion.
Dowers (0) & Allen (10) opened, both being caught at the wicket off C Marshman, bowling at a reasonable lick & gaining movement off the seam. This allowed A Revell & Whitmore to enter the fray, on this occasion putting up a fine 50 partnership before Revell (22) was bamboozled by a flighted one from McLaggan. Whitmore had been put down by the keeper on 11 and how Ardrossan would rue that miss.
The target was chased down successfully with 11 overs to spare. Whitmore, merciless on anything short and strong through the covers, a superb 94 not out and McLaren, dogged, ensuring an inaugural league win.
All in all, a great team performance with everyone contributing. Let’s keep it up!
