The inaugural match of the WDCU Roddy McLeod Conference got under way in rather damp condiitons.
The stalwart cricketers of Windyedge & Whiteinch were undeterred. McLaren elected to field & wickets started tumbling at regular intervals. I Gibson proved to be the stand out bowler with 3 for 25, 2 of which were caught behind in spectacular fashion by the Panther. D Gibson bowled with great consistency and was unlucky to go wicketless. Cochrane (2 for 29) hit his metronomic stride quickly and E Dowers bamboozled the batsmen on his way to 2 for 29. Kapilan & A Allen chipped in handily with a wicket apiece. M Asif Chaudhury top scored with 51, circumspect at first, before playing some pleasing shots.
After a splendid tea, and with the sun now shining, Windyedge got off to a flying start. Kapilan raced to 31, perishing when attempting one big shot too many, with C Allen (12) in support. A period of consolidation followed, before McLaren (33) & E Dowers shared a 50 partnership, and the scent of an unlikely victory only 25 runs away. A valiant last wicket partnership between the Gibson brothers ensured a nailbiting finish, ultimately falling just short.
An most entertaining match, played in a tremendous spirit throughout, Whiteinch being the worthy winners, but encouraging signs for the season ahead for Windyedge!
